History

Saint’s Rest, built in about 1926, was one of the first cottages constructed on the 1 1/2 mile stretch of beach that extends between Presque Isle Park and Middle Island Point. Milk could be obtained from the closest neighbor, 1/2 miles away, who had a cow. Owned and used by S.L. Christensen as a summer camp, the site was outfitted with a piano, a 78 rpm phonograph, lots of books, and a small boat with outboard motor. Supplies were picked up in town and hauled along the beach. Perishable items, such as milk and cheese, were kept in a dumbwaiter that was lowered to the basement into a tube sunk into the sand, which kept the items cool.
